About Weathersfield

Weathersfield is a township on the southern line of Trumbull County. It is the only Weathersfield Township in Ohio, named after Wethersfield, Connecticut. It began as township three of range three of the Connecticut Western Reserve, organized into a township and election district under the name Weathersfield in 1809, though no record of its first officers survives. The township covers about twenty-three square miles, and the 2020 census counted 24,689 people there.

Salt Springs and Early Settlement

The salt springs here were known to white settlers as early as 1755 and were marked on the Evans map of that date. The water held only a very small percentage of saline matter, but enough of it to draw deer from miles around, and the first settlers found deer licks and trails leading to the principal springs. General Parsons of Middletown, Connecticut obtained a grant of about thirty-six thousand acres, the first grant of land the State of Connecticut ever made, and the tract took in very nearly what became known as the great salt springs tract. Parsons set up salt works after receiving his grant, but he drowned at Beaver Falls while returning to Connecticut and the works were abandoned. Later settlers came across the old kettles the boiling had been done in, and huge heaps of ashes showing how much labor had been spent there. The first settlers were drawn to the salt spring hoping to make a fortune from salt, but they soon learned the water had been vastly over-estimated and fell back on hunting and on what the land produced.

Reuben Harmon appears to have been the township's first settler, the only man on the Trumbull County tax list as a resident of township three, range three in 1801. He had come from Vermont in 1797, bought five hundred acres of the salt spring tract, and set up to manufacture salt. Nearly all of the township's early settlers came from Pennsylvania, and many moved further west after a few years, leaving no record of their coming or their going beyond the marks of their work on the fields and meadows.

Villages and Community Life

Michael Ohl moved from Austintown to Weathersfield in 1815 and settled on the Meander at the spot where the village of Ohltown grew up. He laid the place out, built a grist mill and a sawmill soon after arriving, kept the first store there in part of his own house, and was Ohltown's first postmaster. Dan Eaton, the pioneer iron manufacturer of the Mahoning valley, announced that whiskey would have no part in the raising of his barn, and when none of his neighbors would turn out without it, he hired men and had the barn built anyway, probably the first building raised in the township without it. Eaton and Miller Blachly were the leaders of a temperance society begun about 1830 during the Washingtonian movement, which met in schoolhouses and private dwellings and lasted several years.

The township's first burial ground stood near the salt spring, but every body was later moved to other cemeteries and nothing now marks where it was. Union Cemetery, northeast of Niles, is the principal cemetery of the township, with interments made there as early as 1804. Today much of the city of Niles lies in the north of the township, the village of McDonald in the east, and part of the census-designated place of Mineral Ridge in the south.

About Your Medication
