About Mineral Ridge

Mineral Ridge is a census-designated place, not an incorporated village or city. It has had no village government since 1917. Weathersfield Township handles local government for its Trumbull County part, and Austintown Township does the same for its Mahoning County part. The 2020 census counted 3,951 residents across a little over three square miles, and 44440 is a Mineral Ridge ZIP code.

Coal and the Black Band Ore

Main Street in Mineral Ridge runs along the ridge of land that gives the town half its name, and coal deposits near the original town site gave it the rest. Before the 1850s this was mainly a farming community, with coal mined on a small scale from the 1830s. In 1833 Roger Hill, a coal miner from Pennsylvania, moved to Mineral Ridge and pointed out coal showing in a stream bed to Michael Ohl. In 1835 Hill opened the first mine here, on Coal Run on Ohl's farm, which lay across the county line in Austintown Township. Beneath the coal he found a hard layer he judged worthless and left unworked as the floor of the mine.

In the mid-1850s, John Lewis, who had mined in Monmouthshire before settling at Mineral Ridge in 1854, recognized that layer as the same black band iron ore he had mined back home, and a test quantity proved him right. The old coal openings at Mineral Ridge were reopened and searched for it. The ore was mixed with other ores at Governor David Tod's Brier Hill furnace and at Jonathan Warner's furnaces in Mineral Ridge, and the iron it produced became known as American Scotch Pig and Warner's Scotch Pig. Warner built the first furnace at Mineral Ridge, the Ashland furnace, with Captain James Wood of Pittsburgh in 1858 and 1859; by 1882 his furnaces had been sold and torn down. An Ohio History Connection marker on the black band ore, erected in 2016 with the Mineral Ridge Historical Society, stands at Stewart Street and South Main Street, which is Ohio Route 46.

Village Government, On and Off

The first coal shipped from Mineral Ridge to Cleveland went out in 1857, and after the railroad reached the village in 1869 the population grew quickly. Mineral Ridge was the first station south of Niles on the Niles and New Lisbon railroad. The village incorporated in April 1871 with Joseph Stuart as its first mayor, and the first ordinance its council passed, in May 1872, kept horses, cattle, swine, sheep and other animals from roaming at large. That first council met in the school building on Depot Street, which was still standing in 2022.

Voters unincorporated the village in 1885 and reincorporated it in November 1889. In 1917 residents voted 172 to 46 to give up the village charter, after the county said the township, county and state would pave the main road with brick if the town gave up its corporation. The paving took more than four years to begin, and Mineral Ridge has been unincorporated ever since. A 1940 petition to incorporate again, driven by the need for water from the Meander Reservoir, failed; at the time much of Mineral Ridge relied on cisterns and delivered water.

Churches, Schools and Local Institutions

The Welsh Baptist church at Mineral Ridge was built in 1858, and a Welsh Independent church followed soon after. The Odd Fellows lodge here was instituted in August 1871 and in 1874 built a three-story brick block with two store rooms on the ground floor and a public hall with a stage on the second. The post office was first established in 1860 on the Mahoning County side, was discontinued after a few months over politics and a lack of support, and was re-established in 1863 with a daily mail.

In December 1870 the village voted to form a union school district, and a two-story brick school on a lot of more than two acres went up in the early 1870s. Mineral Ridge High School is the only high school in the Weathersfield Local School District, and its teams are the Rams in orange and black. Weathersfield Township's own offices are on Prospect Street in Mineral Ridge.
