Bazetta is a township in Trumbull County, located at the center of the county. It had 5,912 residents at the 2020 census, spread across two ZIP codes, 44410 and 44481, and covers about twenty-four and a half square miles, roughly three and a half of them water. Students living in Bazetta Township attend Lakeview Local Schools and Lakeview High School.

How Bazetta Began

In 1795 the Connecticut Land Company offered for sale a 17,247-acre tract named Bazetta Township, divided into 100 parcels and sold off to early pioneers. Where the name came from is not settled, and it is the only Bazetta Township in Ohio. One account traces it to the Bible, from a story told by the daughter of first settler Edward Scofield, though the local historical society could not find the word in any Bible it checked. A resident reported in 1989 that Bazetta was instead the name of a hymn tune popular in the early 1800s.

The first settlements came about 1804 or 1805, when Edward Scofield and John Budd brought their families from Hubbard, Ohio, and cut their way through the woods to reach the land. Bazetta filled in more slowly than the townships around it, because the land was held by speculators, so most early settlers bought their farms on credit and paid them off out of what the farms produced. In 1813, during the War of 1812, the township's men able to carry arms were ordered into the field at oats harvest, and their wives took the children out, set the older ones to minding the babies, and brought the harvest in themselves with rake and pitchfork. The first schoolhouse was a small log building with a single log cut out for light, greased paper pasted over the opening, and desks made from boards laid across pins driven into the wall logs. A better one followed about 1814.

From Baconsburg to Cortland

Samuel Bacon traded his farm for a mill property in 1816, and the Bacon family ran a sawmill there from 1816 to 1850. Because Bacon put up some of the first frame store buildings, the settlement became known locally as Baconsburg. When the railroad came through and a depot was built, the Baconsburg signboard came down and one reading Cortland went up in its place, a name credited to Orrin Gates, a minister who arrived with the railroad and had previously lived in Cortland, New York. Most of the city of Cortland still lies within the northeastern part of Bazetta Township today.

Mosquito Creek Lake

Mosquito Creek Lake covers part of Bazetta Township, with Mosquito Lake State Park sitting on the lake's southern portion and stretching across Bazetta and Mecca townships, and the Mosquito Creek Wildlife Area on the northern portion. The reservoir was authorized under the Flood Control Act of 1938 and finished by the US Army Corps of Engineers in April 1944, later renamed from Mosquito Creek Reservoir to Mosquito Creek Lake by the Board on Geographic Names in 1971. In 1943, the Army Corps of Engineers moved 400 graves from the old Bazetta Cemetery on Route 305 to the West Bazetta Cemetery, and the old cemetery ground went under the water of Mosquito Lake.

When Dr. John Mistretta was 12 years old he suffered a bad fall. It left him with a back injury, a lot of pain, and several other health problems he thought were unrelated.
