If you are reading this bent over your phone because standing up straight is not an option today, you are the patient we see more than any other. People come into Back 2 Health Chiropractic in Warren who can barely get out of bed in the morning, who can barely get dressed, who have trouble getting up from a chair or the couch, and who cannot sit through a car ride to Niles or Cortland without shifting the whole way. Some of them have been putting up with it for a few days. Some of them have been putting up with it for years.

Dr. John Mistretta has been helping people in the Howland area get out of that situation for a long time. His approach is simple to describe and hard to shortcut: find out what is actually causing the pain, explain it to you in plain language, correct it with gentle, specific adjusting, and then give you the tools to keep it from coming back. This page walks through how back pain usually starts, why it tends to hang around, and exactly what a visit here looks like.

Where Back Pain Usually Comes From

Your lower back is built to move and to carry load at the same time, and most of the time it does both without complaint. It is made up of stacked vertebrae, the discs that cushion them, the small joints on the back of each vertebra that guide movement, the muscles and ligaments that hold everything together, and the nerves that pass through it on their way to your legs. Back pain almost always comes from one or more of those parts being irritated, stuck, or overloaded.

A joint that has stopped moving the way it should makes the joints above and below it work harder. A disc that has been compressed for months can begin to bulge and press on a nerve. Muscles that have been guarding a sore area go into spasm and pull the spine further out of balance. Poor posture, a job that keeps you sitting or lifting, an old injury that never fully healed, and simple wear over the years all feed into the same pattern.

That is why back pain so often seems to come out of nowhere. You bend to pick up a laundry basket, or you sneeze, and suddenly you cannot straighten up. The laundry basket was not the cause. It was the last straw for a problem that had been building for a while.

Why It Keeps Coming Back

Most people who come to us for back pain have already had it before. It flared, they rested, maybe they took something for it, it settled down, and then a few months later it flared again, usually a little worse. That cycle is the most common story in our office.

The reason is that rest and medication address how the back feels, not what the back is doing. Pain medication can take the edge off, and some of it comes with unwanted side effects of its own, but it does not change a joint that is not moving or a spine that is out of balance. When the medication wears off, the mechanical problem is still there, waiting for the next laundry basket.

Correcting the cause is different work. It takes a thorough examination to find it and a specific plan to fix it. That is what we do here.

Back Pain at Work and at Home

Much of the back pain we see in Trumbull County comes from ordinary life rather than a single accident. Jobs that involve lifting, twisting, or long hours on concrete floors load the low back all day. Jobs at a desk or behind the wheel do the opposite, keeping the spine locked in one position until it stiffens. Yard work, a weekend of moving furniture, or sleeping on a worn-out mattress can tip either kind of back into a flare.

Part of a good care plan is looking at those daily patterns with you. Small changes in how you lift, how you sit, and how you set up your workspace often make the difference between a back that stays corrected and one that keeps needing to be fixed.

How Dr. John Approaches Back Pain

Health care is not one size fits all, and back pain is a good example. Two patients can walk in with the same complaint and need two completely different plans. So the first thing Dr. John does is find out what is going on with you specifically.

That starts with your history: when the pain started, what makes it better or worse, what you have already tried, what else is going on with your health, and what you want to get back to doing. Then comes a thorough examination of your spine, your nervous system, and your joints, looking at how they are working together rather than at one sore spot in isolation. When it is needed, X-ray imaging is done right here in the office, so the findings are based on what is actually happening in your spine rather than on a guess.

Then Dr. John does something patients tell us they have not experienced before. He sits down and explains what he found, in language you can understand, and exactly what it is going to take to correct it. No mystery, no jargon, no pressure.

The care itself uses evidence-based methods and specific, scientific, gentle adjusting techniques. The goal is the best results in the shortest time, and the plan is tailored to you, your body, and your goals.

What We See in the Office

Low back pain and sciatica are among the most common problems we see in new patients. We frequently have people come in who can barely get out of bed or barely get dressed. They have great difficulty getting up from sitting or lying down, or even just walking or riding in the car.

Once we determine the cause of their pain and begin care, most experience significant pain relief and are able to move better within just a few adjustments. In time, the pain is gone and they are able to do more than they could before the problem started. Everyone responds differently, and Dr. John will be straight with you about what he expects for your situation, but that is the pattern we see over and over in this office.

The patients who do best are usually the ones who stopped waiting. Back pain that is a few weeks old tends to respond faster than back pain that has been ignored for a few years, simply because the body has had less time to build compensations around it. If you are on the fence, the exam is the place to start.

If You Have Already Tried Other Things

If you have tried over-the-counter medication, ice, or heat, you already know they help for a while and then stop helping. If you have tried another chiropractor, you should know that chiropractic is not one size fits all either. Techniques differ, and so does the amount of attention that goes into finding the cause before adjusting anything. If you have done physical therapy, some of what you learned there will still serve you, and a look at how your spine and joints are working together may explain why the exercises did not finish the job.

And if what is going on in your back turns out to be something chiropractic care is not the answer for, Dr. John will tell you. If your problem is something we can't help you with, we will get you to someone who can.

When Back Pain Needs More Than Chiropractic Care

Some back pain needs to be evaluated somewhere else first. If you have lost control of your bladder or bowels, have numbness in the groin or in both legs, have back pain with a fever, or have had a serious fall or accident, go to urgent care or the emergency room before you call us. Those are not chiropractic problems until they have been ruled out.

For everything else, the examination here will tell us whether your back is something we can correct. If it is not, we will say so, and we will get you to the right provider.

His Own Back Pain Started at 12

Dr. John did not choose this work from a textbook. When he was 12 years old, he suffered a bad fall that left him with a back injury, a lot of pain, and several other health problems that seemed unrelated. For months his parents took him from doctor to doctor. Each one tried something different, and none of it worked.

As a last resort, the family tried chiropractic. It did not just help the back pain. It got rid of it, and the other health conditions cleared up too. He decided right then that this was what he wanted to do for other people. After 39 years in practice, it is still what drives him. He loves seeing someone who has tried everything else, gotten no results, maybe suffered for years, finally try chiropractic and find out that this was the answer all along.

Your First Visit

Plan on a conversation before anything else. Dr. John wants to hear your history, your symptoms, and what you are hoping to get back to, whether that is sleeping through the night, getting through a shift, or picking up a grandchild without bracing for it.

Then comes the examination, and X-rays if they are needed. Once he knows what is going on, he explains it and lays out a care plan built for you. You will know what the plan is, why it is the plan, and what it is meant to accomplish.

Our goal is not to keep you coming in forever. It is to get you feeling better as quickly as possible and to give you the tools to manage your own health going forward.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a chiropractor help with lower back pain?

Yes. Low back pain is one of the most common reasons people come to Back 2 Health Chiropractic. Dr. John looks at how your spine, nervous system, and joints are working together, finds the cause of the pain, and corrects it with gentle, specific adjusting. Most of our low back patients notice significant relief and better movement within a few adjustments, although everyone responds differently.

How many visits does it usually take before back pain improves?

It depends on what is causing the pain and how long it has been there. Many patients feel meaningful relief within the first few adjustments, and problems that are weeks old usually respond faster than problems that are years old. Dr. John will give you an honest expectation for your situation after the examination rather than a number pulled from the air.

Do you take X-rays for back pain?

When they are needed, yes. X-ray imaging is available right in the office. Dr. John uses it when the examination suggests the findings will change the plan, so the care is based on what is actually happening in your spine. Not every back pain patient needs X-rays, and he will tell you whether you do.

Is chiropractic adjusting safe for back pain?

Dr. John uses evidence-based care and specific, scientific, gentle adjusting techniques chosen for your body after a thorough examination. The exam, and X-rays when needed, are what make the care specific rather than generic. If your examination shows a problem that needs a different kind of care, he will tell you and get you to the right place.

What if my back pain travels down into my leg?

Pain that travels into the buttock or leg, or numbness and tingling in the leg or foot, often points to an irritated nerve in the low back, which is what most people mean by sciatica. That is something we see often. The examination is designed to find where the nerve is being irritated so the care addresses it directly.

Should I use ice or heat for back pain at home?

For a fresh flare-up, ice for 15 to 20 minutes at a time tends to calm inflammation, and heat is usually better for stiff, tight muscles once the sharp pain has settled. Both are temporary. If you are reaching for ice or heat more than once in a while, that is a sign the cause has not been addressed, and it is worth an exam.

Do I need a referral to see Dr. Mistretta?

No. You can call the office directly at (330) 856-3236 and schedule an appointment. If you have imaging or records from another provider, bring them along, but they are not required to get started. Many patients come on the recommendation of a friend or family member; others simply find us and call. Either way, the first visit starts with a conversation.

Do you see back pain patients from Niles, Cortland and Howland?

Yes. The office is on Niles Cortland Road in Warren, in the Howland area, and patients come from Niles, Cortland, Champion, Warren, and across Trumbull County. Dr. John has been part of the Howland community for 20 years, and the location is an easy drive from any of those communities.

What happens at the first visit for back pain?

You and Dr. John talk through your history, your symptoms, and your goals. He performs a thorough examination of your spine, nervous system, and joints, takes X-rays if they are needed, and then explains what he found and exactly what it will take to correct it. You leave knowing the plan and the reason for it.

Will I have to keep coming in forever?

No. Our goal is not to keep you coming in forever. It is to get you feeling better and to give you the tools to manage your own health in the future. Some patients choose periodic wellness visits once their plan is complete, and that is always their choice, never a requirement.
