About Vienna

Vienna Township is the only township of that name in Ohio. It covers about twenty-three and a half square miles and had a population of 3,978 at the 2020 census, and 44473 is a Vienna ZIP code.

How Vienna Began

The land was surveyed in 1798 as Township 4, Range 2 of the Connecticut Western Reserve, under the direction of the Connecticut Land Company, and its original proprietors were Uriel Holmes Jr., Ephraim Root and Timothy Burr. Three of the company's surveyors and their families were among the first to settle the township, in 1799, and Dennis Clark Palmer, born in 1775, was the first resident and went on to become Vienna's first township clerk in 1806. The township itself was organized and recognized by the Trumbull County Commissioners on March 12, 1806. It took in Brookfield Township until 1811, and its first government was elected on April 7, 1806.

The Township Green

On June 20, 1810, the Presbyterian Society bought eight acres on the northwest corner of Vienna Center from proprietors Uriel Holmes and Ephraim Root, for twenty dollars, and that land became the township green. The green still carries Vienna Presbyterian Church, Vienna Methodist Church, the Copper Penny Masonic Lodge, built originally as the two-story Vienna School Number 1, the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, the Bicentennial Gazebo and the Vienna Township Cemetery. A building put up on the green in 1825 was used for church services and township meetings and also housed Vienna Academy, an early English school for boys. In the early twentieth century it was moved to Youngstown-Kingsville Road north of Vienna Center, where it now serves as Vienna Township Hall.

Clocks, Coal and Temperance

Between 1812 and the 1830s, Vienna was home to a number of clock-making factories, a frontier extension of one of Connecticut's signature industries, and its clockmakers built tall case and shelf clocks with wooden works, powered by the township's own streams and creeks. An economic boom began in 1866 when businessman Ira B. Mackey Jr. opened the first coal mine, and men looking for work poured in as some twenty mines opened over the following twenty years. Vienna Center changed with the boom, gaining thirty-two saloons, barrooms and billiard parlors, and some residents answered by founding temperance societies. Tensard Mackey, Ira's brother, ran a temperance hotel on the northeast corner of Vienna Center that stood until 1966. In 1880 Vienna's temperance societies petitioned the state to let women vote on local issues. A team appointed by the Ohio General Assembly to report on mining conditions visited the Vienna Coal Company's mine in August 1871, and Andrew Roy, later State Inspector of Mines, wrote what he saw there into his section of the report. Ohio's first mining safety law followed in 1874.

Vienna in the Twentieth Century

After the mining era ended, Vienna went back to being an agricultural community, and its population did not rise noticeably again until the late 1920s, largely through immigrants from Southern and Eastern Europe who bought farms and worked in the steel and iron mills of Youngstown, Niles, Girard and Sharon, Pennsylvania. The Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport was built in 1939 and 1940 as one of the last Works Progress Administration projects, and the Youngstown-Warren Air Reserve Station followed in the 1950s. Part of the city of Girard lies in southwestern Vienna Township, and the census-designated place of Vienna Center sits at the center of the township. In 1961, Vienna and Fowler townships created a joint school district, now the Mathews Local School District, whose three schools, Baker Elementary, Currie Elementary and Mathews Junior-Senior High, are each named for a revered schoolteacher in the district.
