Newton Falls is an incorporated municipality in Trumbull County, and most of it lies in the northwestern part of Newton Township. The population was 4,557 at the 2020 census, the town covers just under two and a half square miles, and the ZIP code is 44444. Newton Falls takes its name from the two sets of falls inside it, each on a different branch of the Mahoning River, which flows through town.

How the Name and the Township Came to Be

Newton Township was formed from the Connecticut Western Reserve and was likely named for Newtown, Connecticut soon after its creation in 1806, making it one of five Newton Townships in Ohio. Early property owners are believed to have spent time in Newtown before leaving for the Ohio Country, and the name Newton may be a corruption of Newtown. Ohio counts a municipality of five thousand or more residents at a federal census as a city and anything smaller as a village, and a city that falls below five thousand becomes a village. Newton Falls has moved between village and city status as its population has risen and fallen, counting 5,038 residents in 1960, 5,378 in 1970, 4,960 in 1980, 5,002 in 2000, 4,795 in 2010, and 4,557 in 2020. Its government today is a mayor who sits on council and votes to break ties, five elected council members, and an appointed manager.

The Covered Bridge

Newton Falls is known for its ZIP code, 44444, and for its covered bridge, built around 1831 across the east branch of the Mahoning River. It is a three-span Town lattice truss bridge with vertical siding, 123 feet long and twenty-four feet wide, with a clear span of 101 and a half feet and a sixteen foot roadway. A pedestrian walkway was added to the side in 1921 for children on their way to the school on Center Street. Remarkable Ohio describes it as the second oldest existing covered bridge in the state, the oldest covered bridge still in use on its original site, the only covered bridge in Ohio with a covered crosswalk, and the last surviving covered bridge in Trumbull County. The older Roberts Covered Bridge, from 1829, has been moved off its original site. The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 16, 1974, is maintained by Trumbull County, and is also known as the Arlington Boulevard Covered Bridge, standing off State Route 534. It reopened in December 2007 after a two-year restoration, went out of service in July 2009 when a delivery truck damaged it, and reopened again in 2010.

The 1985 Tornado

On May 31, 1985, an F5 tornado struck Newton Falls as part of a wider United States-Canadian tornado outbreak, and it was the only F5 to hit Ohio that day. It damaged most of downtown, destroyed many homes and businesses, and damaged the senior and junior high schools, destroying the gymnasium and leaving the junior high unusable. Between seventy and eighty people were injured, and four hundred families were left homeless, and the Ohio Army National Guard credited the warning sirens for the lack of deaths in Newton Falls. The covered bridge itself was damaged in the tornado and later repaired. A monument to the tornado was put up in 2022 at the corner of Broad and Center Streets.
