About Howland

Howland Township is one of twenty-four townships in Trumbull County, and it is the only Howland Township in the state of Ohio. It is one of only two urban townships in the county. The 2020 census counted 19,042 people here, down slightly from 19,451 at the 2000 census, across about eighteen square miles. The township is governed by a three-member board of trustees and an elected fiscal officer. Part of the city of Warren, the county seat, lies in the west of the township, and part of the city of Niles lies in its south.

How Howland Got Its Name

The township is named for the Howland family, Pilgrims who crossed on the Mayflower. John Howland landed at Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1620, and a descendant of his bought the township from the Connecticut Land Company in 1795. An 1882 county history records that the purchaser paid $24,000 for Howland and Greene townships together. The first settler arrived in 1799, and in 1812 the county commissioners organized township four, range three, into its own township and election district, though the early records from that organization have since been lost. Excepting one family, the first settlers were Pennsylvanians, and the 1882 history credits Captain John H. Adgate, who brought his family in 1799, owned sixteen hundred acres in the southwest of the township, and built the first cabin and made the first clearing.

Mills, Water, and Stone

Mosquito Creek runs through Howland from north to south and divides it into two very nearly equal portions, while the Mahoning River cuts across a small corner in the southwest. The land rolls, with a crest east of the creek rising about two hundred feet above the stream and one about a hundred and fifty feet high on the west side. A sawmill went up in 1814, built by Samuel Kennedy on a branch of Mosquito Creek, and a gristmill followed the next year, a small log building with a single run of stones put up by Septimus Cadwalader in the north of the township. An extensive bed of flagstone runs nearly the whole length of the township west of the creek, worked in 1882 at the Austin, Ewalt and Davis quarries, and the stone resists the strongest acid and wears slowly, and the sidewalks of Warren were mostly laid with it.

Around 1830, Howland Springs opened as a health spa on a tract first owned by John Hank, who had come from Pennsylvania in 1802. By 1882 the grounds had grown into a noted summer resort with buildings and accommodations for visitors, the water believed to carry medicinal properties, and it ran until it burned that same year. Howland Springs Road SE still carries the name, and Howland Springs Elementary School stands on it today.

Howland Since

The township stayed sparsely populated until 1953, when the Clifton-Hyde housing development was built, and it has grown steadily since as the nearby cities of Warren and Youngstown suburbanized it. Two census-designated places sit inside the township now: Howland Center in the north, with 6,351 residents at the 2020 census, and Bolindale in the southwest, with 1,921. Howland Local Schools, formed in 1917 by consolidating five one-room schools, now runs a separate building for nearly every stage of school: Howland Springs Elementary for preschool and kindergarten, Howland Glen for grades one and two, Mines Elementary for three and four, Howland Intermediate for five and six, Howland Junior High for seven and eight, and Howland High School for nine through twelve.
