About Boardman

Boardman Township counted 40,213 people at the 2020 census, down from a peak of 42,518 in 2000, and it covers a little under twenty-four square miles. 44512 is a Boardman ZIP code. It is the only Boardman Township in Ohio, and there are no incorporated communities inside its borders, so the township government runs the whole area itself. It sits between Youngstown to the north, Struthers to the northeast, Poland Township and Poland to the east, Springfield Township to the southeast, Beaver Township to the south, Canfield Township to the west, and Austintown Township at its northwest corner. The township's motto is A Nice Place to Call Home.

How Boardman Came to Be

The township is named for Elijah Boardman, a land agent of the Connecticut Land Company and later a United States Senator from Connecticut, who took up the land in the late 1790s as township 1, range 2 of the Connecticut Western Reserve. It was organized in the first decade of the 1800s. For generations Boardman was farming country, grain crops and apple orchards, and its own history describes the first 120 years as basically agricultural. The roads in those years were dirt and poorly kept, and the township was divided into quadrants with a farmer in each one responsible for keeping up the roads in his own area.

From Racetrack to Retail

Around the turn of the 20th century the railroad brought Southern Park, a horse racing facility on Washington Boulevard, and it made Boardman an early draw for people coming out from Youngstown. Real urbanization did not start until after World War I, when subdivisions went up along both sides of Southern Boulevard from the Youngstown city line south to Mathews Road, and more neighborhoods, among them Forest Glen, Ridgewood Estates, and the Boardman Park Allotment, followed once Market Street and Glenwood Avenue were improved in the 1930s. The census counted 1,104 people in Boardman in 1910, 5,456 in 1930, 13,606 in 1950, and 27,379 by 1960. Edward J. DeBartolo Sr. started his company in Boardman, and the Boardman Plaza he opened on U.S. Route 224 in 1950 was one of the first strip malls in the country, with three full service grocery stores within a few hundred feet of each other. He followed it with Southern Park Mall near Route 224 and Market Street in 1970. The first Arby's opened here on July 23, 1964, started by brothers Forrest and Leroy Raffel, who had wanted to call it Big Tex and settled for the initials of Raffel Brothers instead. Around 1950 the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company opened a headquarters complex in Boardman, and after it closed in 1977 the campus became the Southwoods Health medical campus along with a branch of Youngstown State University.

Around Boardman Today

U.S. Route 224 is still the township's main commercial corridor, and Ohio State Route 7 runs north and south through it, meeting at Southern Park Mall. Boardman adjoins Mill Creek Park, home to Lanterman's Mill, where grain is still ground. The oldest structure in the township, St. James Episcopal Church in Boardman Park, was built in 1828 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
